The Pony Club UK’s IMGE 2024 adventure in Canada
The trip of a lifetime! That’s how we’d all describe our unforgettable 12 days at the International Mounted Games Exchange (IMGE) in Canada. As members of Team UK, we were filled with excitement and anticipation as we embarked on this journey, led by our incredible coach Maria and chaperone Rupert Gibson. Our team was a fantastic mix of riders, including Charlotte Killen from North Derry, Emma Pearson from Lanark & Upperward, Phoebe Ward from Zetland Hunt, Ruby Mason from Rockwood Harriers, Sophie Locking from Amman Valley, and reserve rider Tilly Webster from Lancaster & District.
From the moment we gathered at Heathrow, it was clear: we were here to have fun, make memories, and of course, compete! And that’s exactly what we did.
Day 1: The Adventure Begins
Our journey kicked off on the 28th of August, 2024, with excitement buzzing as we packed our GB kits and prepared for our departure from Heathrow. After a long flight, we landed in Halifax, where we met Allisia Cue, the trip organiser, and joined the teams from the United States and New Zealand. We headed straight to Hobby Horse Farm in Coldbrook, our home for the first week. Upon arrival, we were welcomed by the Australian and Canadian teams, and together, we enjoyed a traditional thanksgiving dinner—a perfect way to bond before diving into the adventure.
Day 2: Hiking, Swimming, and Team Bonding
Our second day began with a scenic 2-hour hike through Blomidon Provincial Park. The views of the sea from the look-off points were breathtaking, and after a picnic on the hillside, we headed down to the beach. A swim in the icy Atlantic waters was the perfect way to cool off, followed by a hilarious attempt at throwing and catching an American football. The day ended with some exploration of nearby caves before the Australian and Canadian teams had their first training session.
Day 3: Kayaking and Exploring Lunenburg
Early the next morning, we set off for an unforgettable sea kayaking adventure with Blue Rocks Kayaking. The four-hour tour around islands and seal breeding grounds was truly magical, especially when we were surrounded by hundreds of seals. After a snack break on a quiet island, we kayaked to Lunenburg, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Some shopping and a bit of retail therapy were just what we needed before heading back to Hobby Horse Farm for the first official training session of Team GB, USA, and New Zealand.
Day 4: Ziplining and Fossil Hunting
Our day began at Ontree Adventure Park, where we faced thrilling zip lines and treetop courses. The stunning Nova Scotia scenery was the perfect backdrop for some laughter and a bit of fear as we navigated the high heights. Later, we visited Blue Beach in Lockhartville, where we hunted for fossils along the cliffs. Some of us even braved the deep red sand for a quick dip in the Avon River.
Day 5: Pony Adventures and Mounted Games
On day five, 28 ponies and horses arrived at Hobby Horse Farm, and we were assigned our steeds for a trail ride through Coldbrook’s scenic forests. We had a chance to jump some fences at the Farm’s cross-country course, which was an absolute highlight. Later, we participated in a Mounted Games demonstration for members of the Nova Scotia Pony Club, racing against mixed teams and showing off our skills. The energy was high, and it was amazing to pass on our Mounted Games knowledge to the local riders.
Day 6-7: Exploring Halifax and Whale Watching
After a tour of Halifax city, complete with a seafood lunch and a visit to the Halifax Lancers’ stables, we boarded a boat for a whale-watching excursion. Although the weather was chilly, we saw whales up close and followed them through the ocean, which was a thrilling experience. The next day brought us to Shubie River for tidal bore rafting—a unique experience that had us racing through waves, getting soaked, and sliding down mud banks for a bit of fun.
Day 8-9: Toronto and YMCA Games
Day eight brought a change of pace as we flew from Halifax to Toronto and settled in at the YMCA, where we spent the afternoon playing games and getting to know the other teams. A fun night followed with a campfire and s’mores! The next day, we explored the Toronto Zoo, where we saw everything from polar bears to moose. Despite the excitement, we had a little mishap with Charlotte losing her phone, but it didn’t dampen our spirits.
Day 10-11: The Competition and Victory
After days of exploration and bonding, the long-awaited competition finally arrived. The rain didn’t stop us as we competed in four intense sessions, swapping ponies after each round. The competition with Australia was fierce, but we ended up taking the lead in the final race, the “Potato Picking Scramble,” securing our victory by four points. The thrill of winning was unmatched, and it made all the hard work worth it.
That evening, we celebrated at the gala dinner, enjoying a delicious meal and reflecting on the incredible experiences we’d shared. There were smiles, laughter, and stories to tell for years to come as we boarded the bus back to the YMCA, still buzzing from our victory.
Reflecting on the Journey
Looking back, our time in Canada was nothing short of magical. We didn’t just compete; we made lifelong friends, learned about different cultures, and created memories that will last forever. As Team GB, we were proud to represent the Pony Club with such a dedicated, fun-loving group of young riders. We are incredibly grateful to Maria and Rupert for their guidance and support, and to everyone involved in making this trip a reality. It truly was an experience of a lifetime.
