About the A Test
The A Test is the highest test level within The Pony Club, representing an exceptional standard of riding, horsemanship, and the training of young horses.
Candidates must have successfully completed the B+ Test, Lungeing Test, and AH Test, each of which builds a solid foundation of knowledge and skills. These earlier stages provide a clear pathway of progression, preparing members for the depth and breadth of assessment required at A Test level.
By the time candidates reach the A Test, they will have undergone extensive training and practice with a variety of coaches and horses. Their preparation also includes a wide range of independent study and reading, equipping them with the comprehensive understanding necessary to meet the rigorous standards of the test.
The A Test Structure
The A Test is divided into four phases, which can be taken in any order. Each phase is typically completed in small groups of up to four candidates.
1. Dressage Riding & Technical Knowledge
Candidates ride two or three schooled horses, including at least one in a double bridle. They assess each horse from the ground, ride specific movements, and discuss the horse’s way of going and areas for improvement. Emphasis is placed on correct preparation, use of aids, and understanding of advanced schooling techniques.
2. Jump Riding (Show Jumping & Cross Country) & Technical Knowledge
Candidates ride 3–4 horses, assessing them on the flat and over fences. They jump a course (usually around 1.10m) and ride a short cross-country round, offering analysis on performance and how to improve each horse’s way of going. Specific, horse-appropriate training plans and practical insight are expected.
3. Lungeing
Candidates lunge a horse for approximately 20 minutes, aiming to improve its way of going. They must show understanding of training techniques, use of equipment (e.g. poles), and discuss what exercises were used and why.
4. Training the Young Horse
A discussion phase where candidates share their knowledge and experience in starting young horses, with a focus on safety, welfare, and application of learning theory.
