Megan’s Day at the Defender Burghley Horse Trials Media Day

Over the years, The Pony Club has offered me many opportunities, but one of the best has to be the chance to attend the Defender Burghley Horse Trials Media Day. I entered the competition, filming a video application explaining my interest in both eventing and media and was ecstatic to hear that I had won! So, on Monday 11th August 2025, I set off to Burghley House for the experience of a lifetime.

Immediately upon arriving, there was a fleet of Defenders parked up in the stable courtyard, setting the scene for the luxurious event. I was given a warm welcome, even receiving a goodie bag of merchandise from various partners of the event. I spoke to several of the people in attendance and every one lauded The Pony Club and how its members always have the highest standard of horsemanship.

We were given some tasty bites for breakfast before being formally welcomed to the event, all while surrounded by representatives from some of the biggest equestrian media outlets. Following this, we were introduced to Assistant Event Director Sophie Attwood and competitors for this year’s event, Oliver Townend and Simon Grieve. They were interviewed about what makes this event stand out in the equestrian world, and I was excitedly writing down all the inspirational titbits of wisdom.

This prepared me for the next part of the day, and the part I was the most nervous for. I was given the opportunity to interview all three of the people we had been introduced to, one on one. I had prepared some questions in advance and used their previous words to prompt some of the conversation. It was a challenge, but I found each conversation to be both informative and relaxed, my interviewees balancing professionalism with genuine care for the sport.

I was particularly nervous to speak to Oliver Townend as he has won Burghley Horse Trials three times and is a household name in the eventing world, but found that The Pony Club was common ground for us, and he was happy to talk about his Pony Club days. Equally, Simon Grieve was eager to praise The Pony Club and the fantastic foundation it provides for young riders wanting to progress in their equine career.

Once the challenging part was over, we went to the Great Hall for a talk about the history of Burghley House from Miranda Rock whose family has lived there for generations. We then returned to the Defender fleet where The Pony Club were assigned to the first Defender in the lineup.

It certainly felt like star treatment as we were being driven by Guy Herbert, the course builder who was leading the tour of the cross country course. This gave me ample opportunity for more questions, both about the course and about Guy’s own time in The Pony Club when he was younger. We got a sneak peak of some of the key elements of the course, including the iconic Holland Cooper Leaf Pit and Defender Valley, which will be tackled by the top event riders in the world at the start of September.

It was a huge privilege to attend the Defender Burghley Horse Trials Media Day and I had an absolute blast. A huge thank you must go to The Pony Club and, in particular, Helena Beaumont who accompanied me on the day (and let me sit in the front seat of the Defender!). It is an experience which I will value forever.
