Sports Update – May 2026

The Pony Club at Royal Windsor Horse Show

This month brings one of the highlights of the year with some of our lucky members being able to showcase their talent in Dressage, Show Jumping, Tetrathlon and of course the hotly contested Mounted Games Home International. We wish everyone the best of luck!

Dressage Home International

Held on Friday 15th May the Home International Dressage competition comprises of teams from England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland. Each team will be made up of two Open level riders, two Intermediate level riders and one Novice level rider who are selected based on their results at The Pony Club National Championships.

Click here for more information on the teams.

Show Jumping

A fantastic opportunity for members to compete at one of the world’s most prestigious 5* shows. Members from Areas 8, 11, 12, and 13 are invited to compete against each other.

Congratulations to our selected members for 2026. Click here to see the teams.

Tetrathlon

Throughout the week, teams compete in both the Castle and Frogmore Arenas for a total of seven exciting sessions with the final on Sunday. Read more about it below…

Eventing

May is a busy and exciting month for Pony Club Eventing, with Members across the country making the most of training opportunities ahead of Area competitions, which begin later this month and continue throughout June. A full list of Area competitions can be found via the link below and on The Pony Club Eventing page of the website.

There has already been plenty of excitement this season, including the announcement of Treehouse Sporting Colours as the new sponsors of the Chairman’s Cup. If you missed the news, you can read more about it online.

There is also more exciting news to come, with further announcements about the Pony Club Eventing Nations Cup due in the coming weeks, including the 2026 venue and details of the selection criteria for next year’s teams.

Members considering affiliated competition are also reminded that Pony Club Members can compete in up to two British Eventing competitions before becoming full BE members. In addition, Members who have never previously held BE membership are eligible for a 40% discount on British Eventing membership fees.

If you missed the free ‘What is Eventing?’ webinar on 25th March, it is now available to watch on demand via The Pony Club YouTube channel. Covering everything from getting started in Eventing through to Regional and National Championships, it is a brilliant resource for Members and parents alike.

Congratulations also go to all Pony Club Members who competed at the prestigious LeMieux Grassroots Championships at Badminton. A special well done to Millie Bloomfield of the RAC Saddle Club Pony Club Centre, who won the Best Under-25 award in the Grassroots 90 section with her horse, Jinx – a fantastic achievement on such a major stage.
If you competed, don’t forget to get in touch by emailing eventing@pcuk.org so we can help celebrate your success too!

A Front-Row Role in the Action: Slip Collectors at Badminton Horse Trials

Each year at Badminton Horse Trials, Beaufort Hunt Pony Club Members are proud to take on the vital and much-admired role of Slip Collectors. Coordinated by former Branch Member Fiona Norbury, this year’s team included 10 mounted and 2 unmounted runners, carefully selected by the Branch.
Slip Collectors must be in Year 9 or above and have passed their C Test. They also need access to a suitable pony or horse capable of coping with the electric atmosphere of Cross Country Day. Thankfully, “angelic” ponies were kindly lent to those in need. Turnout is expected to be traditional and immaculate, and horses must be fit and ready for a long day in action, with riders mounting up at 9.30am and finishing after 4pm.
Throughout the day, mounted runners cover their allocated fences, collecting slips and returning them to HQ behind the grandstands or to outposts at Luckington Lane and Huntsman’s Close. Short breaks are taken to rest and refuel both horse and rider. Meanwhile, unmounted runners collect slips from areas such as the arena and collecting ring, where access is more limited on horseback.
This year, the Beaufort team carried out their duties to perfection, receiving numerous comments of appreciation and praise for their cheerful smiles, excellent turnout and polite manners.
The club extends its thanks to Badminton Horse Trials for continuing this much-loved tradition.
2026 Runners: Jessica Swait, Rosie Sainsbury, Martha Hazell, Lola Wood, Amelia Smith, Darcy Bishop-Moore, Evie Eastlake, Grace Fairbairn, Mary Pope, Enola Sparks-Phillips, Iona Breakspear & Rose Wood.

Horsemanship

The Pony Club Dengie National Quiz Final

The Pony Club Dengie National Quiz Final took place in April at the Holywell \Park Conference Centre, Loughborough University. An exciting new venue for this year’s competition. Teams from across the country came together for a fantastic weekend of competition, teamwork, and fun.

Congratulations to all members who took part in this year’s Final. Following months of preparation and Area competitions, finalists put their Pony Club knowledge to the test, demonstrating an exceptionally high standard, along with impressive dedication, confidence, and teamwork throughout the event.

A huge thank you goes to all competitors, trainers, parents, judges, organisers, volunteers, and the Horsemanship Committee, whose hard work behind the scenes made the event such a success.

A special shoutout also goes to Dengie for their continued support and sponsorship of the competition.

We would love to hear your feedback on this year’s event. Please take a few moments to complete our feedback form here.

Thank you again to everyone involved — and congratulations once again to all of our fantastic members.

The Thelwell Art Competition

Entries for this year’s Thelwell Art Competition have now officially closed, and we are delighted with the fantastic response and creativity shown by members across all categories, bringing this years theme ‘Pony Club Fun Memories’ to life.

Judging is now underway, with our panel carefully reviewing the impressive range of entries submitted. Thank you to everyone who took the time to enter and showcase their artistic talents.

We look forward to announcing the finalists and winners very soon!

Mounted Games

May is always one of the busiest and most exciting months in the Mounted Games calendar, with Pony Club Members taking part in the sport at every level – from first-time Novice competitors right through to riders preparing to represent their country at Royal Windsor Horse Show.

Across the country, nearly all 19 Area competitions have now taken place, and it has been fantastic to see participation continuing to grow. Area 12 welcomed six more teams than in 2025, while Area 8 recorded the highest number of entries with an incredible 25 teams competing across Junior, Senior and Pairs classes. The growth in numbers is brilliant to see and reflects the huge amount of work happening within Areas to encourage and support Mounted Games.

A huge thank you must go to the parents transporting ponies and riders to rallies and competitions week after week, the Area Coordinators working tirelessly behind the scenes to grow the sport in their Areas, and the many coaches and volunteers who dedicate countless hours to training sessions and competitions. Alongside them are the District Commissioners, Assistant Representatives and all the other volunteers whose hard work keeps everything running smoothly – Mounted Games simply could not happen without them.

As attention now turns to an exciting week at Royal Windsor Horse Show, many of the riders competing this year will remember not so long ago taking part in those same Novice Area competitions themselves. Teams from England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland and the Republic of Ireland will arrive at Windsor on Wednesday 13th May, settling into camp for the week ahead. Once parked up, the busy preparations begin: ponies unloaded, stables set up, tack checked, riders weighed and the first round of Stable Cup judging underway. The evening then sees the traditional DAKS presentation of colours, where riders receive their Team jumpers ahead of the competition.

Each morning at Windsor begins with trainer briefings led by Chairman Ian Mariner and Chief Steward Tracey Cooksley, giving teams the opportunity to hear important updates, discuss any changes to races or timings and ask questions before the day gets underway. This year promises to be busier than ever, with Teams competing not only in the main Castle Arena but also in the Frogmore Arena, bringing the total number of competition sessions to seven across the week.
Away from the arenas, the schedule remains just as busy. Teams fit in exercise slots and practice sessions alongside public appearances and demonstrations throughout the showground. In previous years, crowds have enjoyed everything from Mounted Games displays to seeing just how many Pony Club Members can squeeze into a Defender – so there is no doubt there will be plenty of fun and entertainment alongside the serious competition again this year!

Of course, there is also an enormous amount of work taking place behind the scenes to keep the event running. Every day, teams gather for lunch in The Pony Club marquee thanks to the legendary Mary Marsden and her catering team. Stable managers care for the teams in the stabling area, line stewards and officials keep everything moving, while judges and scorers work tirelessly to deliver live results for supporters following along from home on Pony Club Results.

The equipment team, led by Alison Bell, once again deserves huge praise for transporting Mounted Games equipment around the country despite being based all the way up in North Yorkshire, while Nicola Way spends every spare minute capturing the action and sharing the Teams’ journey on social media for everyone at home to enjoy. Add in the dedication of trainers, parents and supporters back at camp, and it is clear just how much teamwork goes into making Windsor such a memorable experience for everyone involved.

Finally, keep your eyes peeled for a special episode of Love Your Weekend with Alan Titchmarsh on ITV, airing on Sunday 7th June – you might just spot some of our England and Wales Team Members making an appearance in the famous Manor Farm paddock!

Polo

PC Polo is now open to members up to 25 years old

Earlier this year we did a survey to see if there was interest for players to continue playing PC Polo up to 25 years old and we received an overwhelmingly positive response. So as of this summer, we have opened up the older sections of Loriner, Langford and Gannon to these older members. Please do contact your Branch/Centre Manager or relevant Section Manager if you know of anyone who wants to play.

PC Women’s Polo

Pony Club Women’s Polo matches are planned to take place at the Oxford and Tedworth Friendlies and on the Thursday of the Cowdray Championships. If you are interested to participate and haven’t done so already please contact Phillipa Slatter on 07808 257345. There is also a Women’s PC Polo Training Day taking place at Oxford Polo on 24 July 2026. Entries are through horse events.

Senior Training Squad

After two successful Senior Training Squad sessions at Druids Lodge and Hampshire Polo School earlier this year the first outdoor one is planned for early summer at Cambridge & Newmarket Polo Club. There will also be one at Vaux Park Polo on 20th July 2026 alongside the junior training. Entry for both will be on horse events, dates and entry opening will be sent to Managers and via the PC Polo WhatsApp group.

The aim of the Senior Training Squad is to provide higher level training for our older members to continue their progression in the core areas of technique, tactics and riding for polo and to enhance their knowledge of the training and care of polo ponies. It is open to all members 14 years and over taking part in pony club polo tournaments this year.

Polocrosse

Pony Racing

Wincanton Pony Racing took place on 2nd May and proved to be another hugely successful fixture, with an impressive 71 runners taking part and many races completely full. It is fantastic to see Pony Racing continuing to grow in popularity, with increasing numbers of Members keen to get involved and experience the thrill of racing.

The busy season continues throughout May, with Chelmsford, Exeter and Kelso all still to come and preparations for those race days already well underway behind the scenes. Following the success of the new system used for both Newcastle and Wincanton, the pre-check entry process will continue for upcoming fixtures. Competitors will receive entry lists before entries close, allowing time to check that ponies, riders, and combinations have been entered into the correct races. This process is designed to help ensure class eligibility is correct, while all safety eligibility checks will still be carried out separately by Head Office in consultation with the PRA and DCs/CPs to confirm combinations are safe to race.

Although there are currently no PRA/Pony Club Training Days scheduled – as most take place between July and early spring to prepare jockeys for the racing season – Members are reminded that they can still qualify to race by attending a minimum of two appropriate rallies with their Branch or Centre and being signed off as safe to race by their DC or Centre Proprietor. Full details of what counts as an “appropriate” rally can be found in the rulebook.

Congratulations also go to Lily Hotchkiss, who was the lucky recipient of the Treehouse Sporting Colours voucher and goody bag prize draw. A huge thank you goes to everyone who completed the recent survey – the feedback received will play an invaluable role in helping The Pony Club and the BHA continue to shape Pony Racing and racing industry opportunities for Members in the future.

You may already have noticed that May is officially Pony Racing Month, so keep an eye out across social media and the website for Friday FAQs, Racing Pony of the Month features and a FREE Pony Racing webinar taking place later this month.

As always, full results and updated Points Series standings can be found on the Pony Racing pages of the website.
