JUNIOR HPA

Background

Number of teams too great to manage as one entity and number of players wanting and able to play four chukkas has increased. During term most school matches are 4 chukkas and clubs now running tournaments for the young only. Some of the players are not improving in Pony Club Polo.

    Junior HPA

   All those who play must:

Be a member of a Pony Club Branch.

Be a member of a club with a confirmed HPA handicap.

Hold a British passport and be principally resident in the UK  or      be in full time education in the UK.

Play as an amateur without any economic benefit.

All teams must be entered by an HPA approved team manager and include the Pony Club Branch and Club to which each player belongs. A player may only play in one section of Junior HPA and Pony Club polo

The only restrictions on the teams will be age as on 1st January and handicap but it is intended that the teams will be based on clubs. However, schools and branches may also enter teams with the approval of the HPA.

Apart from the Pony Club rules governing hats and dress, the games will be played according to HPA rules.

Games will be scheduled and administered by an HPA appointed Tournament Director.

Any player can revert to Pony Club polo but the 14 month rule will apply in respect of a transfer to another branch.

Matches will be the responsibility of the respective section managers but if played on a Pony Club day, the Pony Club will be in charge of the overall administration for the day. As everyone will be Pony Club member, they will all be covered by the Pony Club insurance.

It is planned that the semis and finals will be played at Cowdray as part of ‘The Pony Club and Junior HPA Polo Championships’. The Championships will be administered by the Pony Club.

The selection of any representative national team to play here or overseas will continue to be the responsibility of members of the Development Committee.

The organising/hosting of incoming teams will fall to the organisation that has issued the invitation but will be coordinated by the Development Committee; for example, if the team has been invited to play in the one or two chukka polo such as Surtees, it will be the Pony Club, at the SUPA Festival, SUPA, and in Junior HPA, the HPA.

The Junior HPA Section Managers will continue to be members of the Pony Club Polo Committee.

GANNON – under 21 for teams of 0 to 4 goals

Players to be 20, 19 or 18 with a handicap of -1 or above and players of 17 and 16 with a handicap of 0 or above.  No more than one player with a handicap of +2 or above to play in each team.

LANGFORD – under 18 for teams of -4 to 0 goals

Players to be 17, 16, or 15 with a handicap of -2 to +1, and players of 14 with a handicap of 0 or above.   No more than two players with a handicap of +1 per team.

HIPWOOD - under 15 for teams of -7 to -5

Players to be 14, 13 or 12 with a handicap of -2 to -1.

Summary

The polo will be more competitive and should produce an overall higher standard which should in turn lead to a greater incentive to improve. It will also keep the young playing polo within their age group for longer.
