Senior Camp Help Duties……….
Many parents will be aware that there have been changes in rules applying to organisations such as the pony club who work with young people. The Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) aims to help by carrying out checks of disclosures of individuals who are involved in caring for young people.
At camp we need a minimum of 6 people staying over each night (over 6 nights) who either hold a CRB check or have stayed over at previous camps. We really need to hear from you if you have been through this process (through your job or through other youth organisations you may be involved in) as we must meet these requirements if members are to stay at camp overnight.
If you hold a CRB check or have stayed over at previous camps (sleeping in at junior camp will also count) could you please let Helen Smith know as soon as possible on 01789 450757 or 07974 140702
(email smith@prestonsmith.freeserve.co.uk), as well as indicating this on your help form when you return it.
Even if you do not have a child at senior camp this year but feel you may be able to help and have a current CRB check, we would very much like to hear from you.
FITNESS FOR CAMP
Expecting your pony to manage a week at camp without a fitness regime is like you running the marathon without doing any training! PC camp at Ettington requires a higher level of fitness because we are lucky enough to use the gallops.
Presuming your pony has a basic level of fitness this would be a rough guide to the exercise he/she might need prior to camp:
May: walking and trotting on roads and tracks to harden legs, schooling on the flat, slow hill work, one hour 4/5 times per week.
June: introduce slow canter work twice a week interspersed with schooling, hacking, jumping and hill work.
Week 1 400metres cantering twice a week
Week 2 600m " " "
Week 3 800m " " "
Week 4 1000m " " "
July: continue hacking etc
Week 5 1200m cantering twice a week
Week 6 1400m " " "
Week 7 1400m " " "
Week 8 1400m " " "
If you take part in a hunter trial or one day event count this as one of your canters. Try and find good going, a hill to canter up is even better. A simple way of interval training is to canter up a hill and walk down, gradually building up the repetitions each week. Before and after cantering spend time warming up and down ie walk, trot, canter work, trot and walk until cool and not puffing.
As the work increases do not forget to up his concentrated feed.
It might be fun to keep a diary of the work you have given him, his moods and behaviour etc.
Have a fun week at camp!

Senior Camp
For those of you who have not been before please note that it is possible that there will be several turn out rides (usually the younger members) whose ponies will need their hind shoes removed. You will be given a few weeks notice should this apply to you but please bear in mind that if your pony cannot have its shoes off, camp organisers will try but cant guarantee you a stable, in which case your pony would have to be taken home at night.
