Having qualified individually earlier in the summer to represent Northern Ireland in the regional Tetrathlon Championships in Cheshire and as a club to represent the province in the Pony Club Championships in Warwickshire, four local girls Orlagh Daly (Portstewart), Ailanore Harper (Dungiven), Philippa Laverty (Ballymoney) and Claire McCluskey (Portstewart) travelled with their horses to take part in a gruelling but rewarding six days of competition at the end of August. They represented the Northern Ireland Senior Girls Team which finished a credible sixth out of eleven teams and their club, the Route Hunt Branch of the Pony Club, for which they attained the excellent result of seventh out of twenty teams.
Tetrathlon competitions covers the four disciplines: Shooting, Swimming, Running and Riding. In the Shooting Phase, competitors have ten shots with air pistols at a turning target which faces them for 4 seconds. Swimming involves covering as much distance as possible in three minutes for girls and four minutes for boys. Running is a demanding phase in which girls are timed over a cross-country of 1500 metres (girls) and 3000 metres (boys). Finally, riding is a serious test of both rider and horse but is the most popular phase for most competitors. Lasting friendships are forged during the course of competition as the young participants dig deep into personal resolve across the range of activities.
