Two Phase Maddybenny 2007

Route Hunt branch 2-Phase at Maddybenny.

Following on from the successful tetrathlon competition at Maddybenny on 17th June the Route Hunt branch hosted their first 2-phase competition. This competition was very kindly sponsored by Richmonds Agricultural Supplies, Ballyrashane, Coleraine.

The competition started at 11am with the show jumping phase which was judged by Mrs Bernadette Harper and Mrs Norrie Roulston. The junior riders took on the 2ft 3 show jumping course and then proceeded directly to the x-country which was run over 17 very varied fences, some of which required very accurate riding. None of the juniors managed to complete with a clean sheet however young Nicole Heaney, on her pony Snoopy, had just one hiccup on the x-country to end up the clear winner of her section ahead of runner up Tanya Jacobs. Other Route branch members competing in their first 2-phase competition put up very creditable performances taking 3rd -6th places.

The seniors faired a little better on the x-country with 2 riders finishing with no jumping penalties. The time proved a deciding factor, the eventual winner Geraldine Parker (Rolo) just picking up 5 time faults and winning the class by just 2 penalties from Caroline Dinning (Buccephala).

The 2ft 9 class saw the return of Little Joe to Maddybenny. Previously owned by Emma Louise Murray (Route) and now in the hands of young Jonny Mulligan from the Iveagh branch, Little Joe put in faultless show jumping and x-country rounds, picking up only 2 time penalties to win the class from Joseph Evans (Route) on Mr O’Shea. The only other junior rider clear jumping was Sophie Cameron Mitchell who has gained enormously in confidence over the past 2 months on her pony Foxie.

Bann Valley riding club members (also all members of the Route Hunt!!) dominated the senior section of the 2ft 9 class with Lesley McDowell on Oscar the clear winner from Grace Taylor on Callie, the latter having no jumping penalties. Lesley’s quicker time across country, picking up a few time penalties, helped her secure the class.

Just 3 riders took on the open course, and commentator Jack entertained all spectators and riders as they looked on. With only Anna White going clear over the new set of show jumps, her uncle Philip White was first to tackle to x-country fences. Undaunted by the running commentary from his son Jack, Philip put in a faultless round on Lissanoure Trooper’s Hill picking up just 2 time penalties. This was just enough to beat Emma Louise Murray, also clear across country on her new mount Quay Roiale, previously Philip’s amateur show jumper!
